A year in review with the Regional Director of Schools

As 2017 comes to an end, we would love to celebrate the many accomplishments in our schools and all the hard work that goes into putting students first in everything we do.

This was a year of many firsts for Dulwich College International – we welcomed our first students at our sister school, Dehong in Shanghai, along with the new Star City campus at Dulwich College Yangon. Dulwich College Seoul sent off its inaugural graduating class, and they celebrated their first Ivy League acceptance with a successful early decision applicant to Dartmouth College. James, a Dulwich College Beijing student, became our first recruited athlete and committed to NCAA Division 1 school UC Berkeley on a basketball scholarship – the first do so from a high school located in China. We held our first ever International Old Alleynian alumni reunions in Boston and Hong Kong. Led by a Dulwich College Beijing graduate, students from across the network gathered for the first Student Leadership Conference in Shanghai last February. Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi embraced the challenges of the 21st century and launched our first Eco-Explorer Camp with Dulwich College Suzhou, and Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong recently hosted our inaugural “HakD” Hackathon.

There were also the familiar events and academic successes that make up the core of a Dulwich education: world-class practitioners and speakers toured our schools as part of the Diversity Series and Shackleton Lectures, and group wide collaboration flourished in the arts at the Shakespeare Festival in Shanghai and the Dulwich Festival of Music in Singapore. Our Year 13 students averaged a very impressive 37.3 on their IB examinations, and our (I)GCSE students earned a total of 29 Top in China and Top in World awards – no small feat. Dulwich College International’s graduating class of 2017 also received over 400 offers from Russell Group and Ivy League Universities. Wow!

As proud as we are of our students and their achievements, what I remember most vividly about 2017 are not the exam results, the beautiful new buildings, or event headlines; when I reflect on this year I think of the passion I see in each student and staff member when I visit our schools. Each time I’m on campus it’s evident that students love learning at Dulwich, and we are delighted to continue to offer them many different opportunities.
