Be Selective With Your Elective
Dulwich students have always had many opportunities to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities which have enabled them to get involved in a wide range of fixtures for sporting events, musical concerts, drama performances, as well as a range of other enrichment and academic opportunities. Extra-curricular activities are extremely important in order for our students to find and develop their passions for a particular subject or area - should that be learning a new language, working on maths or science challenges, or public speaking. In addition to the extra-curricular activities programme this year, the Senior School launched the Electives Programme.
An Elective runs in a similar way to an extra-curricular activity. Students independently choose from a range of topic areas on offer and these are facilitated as subjects taught by our teaching staff during the school day. Electives are designed and led by our teaching staff who have a passion for a particular subject or interest that is not necessarily related to the subject area they teach. The programme is all about enriching our students beyond the taught curriculum and to give them a deeper knowledge and understanding of a wide range of topics closely linked to the real world experiences. The aim is also to build student confidence, social skills, collaboration and communication skills – as well as having fun while learning!
The Electives Programme in Term 3
The Electives Programme has not stopped just because we have gone to online learning! Over the last few weeks students have been working in their house groups, collaborating virtually on different tasks each week. We have had a Harry Potter themed session, a game of Family Fortunes, a Musical(ish) round and a Chinese Challenge to name a few!
As the Elective programme continues we hope to offer a range of further experiences in order for our students to find something they are passionate about – just like our teachers who are offering them! We are already in discussion about options for future sessions which include ‘Mock Trial’, ‘Creating an Audio Book’, ‘World Architecture’, ‘Public Speaking (LAMDA examinations)’, ‘Creative Writing’ and many more!
The Dulwich College Puxi Electives Programme is a Dulwich Difference which we encourage our Senior students to take advantage of. The programme is another way in which the College curriculum helps to develop our students to become confident, articulate and sociable young people on their journey to Graduate Worldwise.
