DEC Programme: Empowering Students to Build a Sustainable Future

We are proud to deliver the Design Engineer Construct (DEC) programme at Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi, a groundbreaking initiative that makes us the first DEC school in China!

Why did we choose to implement the 'DEC' Progrmme at Dulwich Puxi?

Kelly King, Head of Senior School, Quoted:

Alison Watson (CEO and founder of Class Of Your Own) presented the ‘DEC’ programme at the FOBISIA Conference in 2023, which spoke to both my head and my heart. She discussed the importance of using the built environment to engage and inspire all learners through sustainability and community-centred design. I saw, I heard, I understood, and I wanted our students to be part of it. We believe in our students making a positive difference in the world. The only questions we considered were ‘who’, ‘when’ and ‘how’. ‘If’ was never a consideration.

The introduction of DEC has provided students with a cutting-edge opportunity to shape the future of their Built and Natural Environment at a time when it’s needed most, which marries the academic rigor of the classroom with the real-life challenges of the built environment. And what could be more appropriate to enhance the learning experience than a partnership with award-winning architectural practice Broadway Malyan.

The DEC Award is supported by prestigious organizations like TQUK/AQA and offers students a unique opportunity to dive into the captivating world of the Built Environment. Through these awards, students undertake projects that challenge their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, while instilling in them a deep understanding of sustainability and accessibility.

Recently, our students were tasked with designing a sustainable three-bedroom house that caters specifically to individuals with additional needs. Guided by Broadway Malyan experts, students were exposed to industry-standard design tools and techniques, providing them with invaluable hands-on experience and a steep learning curve whilst being supported by the Associate Director of the company.

On 8 March 2024, our students had the remarkable opportunity to present their innovative designs at the architectural offices of Broadway Malyan. This experience not only validates their hard work and dedication but also exposes them to the professional world, opening their minds to potential career paths in architecture, project management, civil engineering, design and quantity surveying.
