Dulwich Puxi STEAM Curriculum

STEAM at Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi.

The US Department of Education reports that the number of STEM/STEAM jobs in the United States will grow by 14% from 2010 to 2020. That is significantly more growth compared to the national average of around 6% across all job sectors. Yet according to a recent McKinsey study, computer programming and IT jobs top the list of the hardest-to-fill jobs. Popular college majors are often not STEAM related. There seems to be a real disconnect here. Are there just too many students staring blankly at computer screens of code, feeling decidedly uninspired about a career in this area?

Not so at our international school, Dulwich College Puxi! In fact, our Senior School team is on a mission to make STEAM more relevant, more integrated, and more applicable to boys' and girls' lives…from a much younger age.

Our STEAM Camp for Year 5 and Year 6 students used an inter-disciplinary approach to understand the facts around a big issue: What determines Healthy Nutrition?

Y5 and Y6 students tackled the questions of: "What are calories?" "How many calories do we need?" "Why is it important to burn calories?" "What are healthy choices?" They answered these questions through a lens of science: performing hands-on experiments with tangible outcomes. They created artworks and made a film about their scientific understanding. They taste-tested foods, and then exercised to burn off their calories. The day flowed through this inter-disciplinary link of subjects – from science and technology to maths, and from art to engineering - even to sport!

Highly scientific learning, made interactive and fun is a crucial factor for making STEAM more relevant in our learning, and later, in our careers.
