Why Do We Emphasise Global Citizenship?
Because being globally minded means more than understanding the world - it’s about acting within it. It requires political, social, environmental, and economic awareness, and a commitment to making a difference beyond borders. These are the very qualities that shape compelling university candidates and truly Worldwise individuals.
One of the ways we nurture this mindset is through meaningful experiential learning. From Model United Nations to Student Leadership Conferences, Challenge Week, and Eco Camp, our students are regularly immersed in opportunities to think critically, collaborate widely, and grow into socially responsible global citizens.
That spirit came to life as Year 3 students from Dulwich Puxi welcomed their peers from Dulwich Pudong and Dehong Shanghai to campus for Eco Camp 2025, themed “Wonders of Water”. Together, they explored the importance of environmental stewardship, creative thinking, and cross-school collaboration – all celebrating shared values and building bridges between communities.
Learning Through Purposeful Experience
From the outset, Eco Camp was designed not simply as a science experience, but as a platform for developing global citizenship. UNESCO defines global citizenship as “a sense of belonging to a broader community and common humanity,” grounded in values such as sustainability, human rights, and peace. In alignment with this, our students investigated real-world issues through hands-on exploration - testing water samples, learning about purification techniques, and discussing practical ways to safeguard our oceans from harm.
This practical learning helped students understand complex environmental concepts in a tangible way. They weren’t just learning about the importance of clean water, they were discovering their role in protecting it.
Connection, Collaboration, and Compassion
What made this year’s Eco Camp truly special was the interschool collaboration. Students from three schools came together, not as visitors, but as teammates. They worked across campuses, listened to each other’s ideas, and learned the value of different perspectives. The kind that foster empathy, teamwork, and cultural understanding. These are not just soft skills; they are essential qualities of globally-minded citizens who will go on to make a positive impact in the world.
Shaping Tomorrow’s Leaders
Eco Camp 2025 is a living example of what it means to educate for a sustainable future. It reminded us that leadership begins with awareness, action begins with understanding, and that even the youngest students have the power to shape the world around them. Together, we are building bridges: between people, with the planet, and toward a better future.
