Exploring the Wide World of Career Choices: A Visit from SCAD

Martin Zarate
University and Careers Guidance Counsellor

Today, we were honored to host a visit from Ms. Vivyan Lam from The Savannah College of Arts and Design, also known as SCAD. Ms. Lam’s visit was a great opportunity for our students to engage with a university representative in person, and learn different facets of the university application process from her unique perspective.

During her visit, students were able to spend time asking questions, querying application concerns and becoming familiar with the different types of programs that universities have to offer.

SCAD is a creative arts university providing a wide variety of programmes (over 100 degree programmes) related to The Arts; from advertising and architecture, to creative business leadership, design for sustainability, equestrian studies, fashion marketing and management, film and television and many more.

We feel strongly that students should be provided with opportunities to learn about a variety of career options and choices, as they seek their ‘best fit’ higher education institute. Being able to communicate directly with a representative from a university with such a variety of available pathways is the type of fantastic opportunity our University and Careers Counseling department aims to deliver to our students.

Ms. Lam gave our students valuable insights into what universities are looking for in an application or portfolio. She emphasised the importance of having a holistic educational background and being well-rounded in your interests and abilities, noting that these characteristics will benefit students regardless of their target university or degree. Whether you are applying for an engineering school, computer science program or creative arts degree, all universities will look beyond your grades and try to assess the type of person you are, and the contributions you will give back to the university community. This message correlates closely with our desire to develop students who Live Worldwise; equipped with the skills, motivation and knowledge to make a positive impact on the world.

A huge thank you to Ms. Lam for visiting. We look forward to providing even more similar opportunities as a just one key element of our robust University and Careers Counselling programme at Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi. I would encourage anyone keen to learn more about how we work with our Senior School students to guide them on the pathway to their university of choice to register for one of our upcoming Senior School Open Mornings.
