Founder's Day 2024: Celebrating Community Spirit

Founder’s Day 2024 was a resounding success! It was truly inspiring to see our community come together to celebrate; a touch of rain couldn’t dampen the strength of the Dulwich Puxi community and our commitment to contribute to our Community Partnership Programmes. Let’s relive the highlights of this unforgettable day!

Founder’s Day commemorates the founding of Dulwich College in London in 1619, but each year, we infuse our own unique spirit and local flair. This year’s theme at Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi was ‘Secret Garden,’ and our community rose to the occasion splendidly.

On Founder’s Day, we had a host of exciting hospitality options, from food trucks to the ‘Merry Mustang’ Pub Garden. This year, we introduced an exciting new experience—Afternoon Tea hosted by AMENYANGYUN, renowned for its luxurious ambience and impeccable service. This delightful addition transported us to the serene British countryside, enhancing the day’s atmosphere.

Founder’s Day was a spectacular celebration with vibrant performances and an unforgettable talent show. The event kicked off with an electrifying performance by the Thunder Drummers, followed by mesmerizing music from the Joint String Orchestra and Wind Band. The Early Years and Ducks Choirs charmed the audience with their heartwarming songs, while Maqiao Primary School students wowed everyone with their impressive martial arts and gymnastics. Year 3-6 students delivered powerful messages of sustainability through their spirited "Big Sing" acts. The excitement continued with energetic dance routines and beautiful choir renditions, culminating in a grand finale Talent Show that showcased the incredible talents of students, staff, and parents. The day concluded on a high note with a lively DJ set, ensuring everyone left with smiles and cherished memories, eagerly looking forward to next year's festivities.

The energy on campus was palpable, with students eagerly participating in one of their favourite festivals. Each year, the group sets up creative booths, either as an interactive game or as part of their service learning project.

Early Years provided hours of entertainment for the littlest learners with Water Play activities. Our Mandarin team held lively rounds of Mahjong competitions.  Year 3 entertained with the game 'To Ping or Not To Pong,' and Year 6 delighted everyone with their humorous 'Splat the Teacher' activity. Year 2 showcased entrepreneurial spirit with handmade candles and key rings, while others enjoyed the lollipop hoop game, testing their aim for delicious rewards in the Year 9 booth. Year 8’s Bake Sale, Year 10’s Slushy booth and Year 12's Snack Shop offered scrumptious treats.

Founder’s Day truly embodied our commitment to making a positive difference in the world. Year 4, 7, and 8 students led the way with booths supporting various charities. Year 4 sold items from Hearts and Hands, benefiting the deaf and disabled community in Kunming, China, and demonstrating their leadership and compassion. Year 7 showcased our exceptional honey from Elevated Honey Co., a social enterprise in Shangri-La, Yunnan. This honey, produced by wild Yunnan bees from our Dulwich Puxi apiary, supports bee conservation, helps pollinate the wilderness, and provides vital income for mountain communities. Year 8 offered unique insulated bottles known for their dynamic curved designs, with proceeds supporting underdeveloped regions, blending art and functionality to bring joy and support to those in need.
