International Maths Competitions: Are They Worth It?
Dulwich College is well-known for our Academic Rigour. Nowhere is this more evident than in our Mathematics programmes, where students are regularly challenged to solve complex problems, think independently, and compete on global stages.
Mathematics is a cornerstone of academic excellence. It sharpens reasoning, develops precision, and equips students with the problem-solving skills they need to thrive in today’s world. The key to Dulwich education is that our students are challenged through mathematics inside and outside the classroom.
Over the past few weeks, our Junior and Senior School students have tested their skills in a series of international competitions, and the results speak for themselves. These results are a testament to our academic rigour and our students’ commitment to excellence.
American Mathematics Competition (AMC)
Our AMC results have just arrived — and they are nothing short of exceptional.
- One won the Perfect Scores, achieved by only the top 4% worldwide.
- One was named to the Honour Roll of Distinction, representing the top 10% globally.
FOBISIA Primary Mathematics Competition
Our Junior School mathematicians also impressed on the international stage at the FOBISIA Primary School Competition in Vietnam.
- James Z placed 3rd overall, earning a Gold Medal as one of the top 5% of participants.
- Albert L came 4th overall, also earning Gold.
- Aidan H secured a Silver Medal.
High School Team Maths
Our Senior School students demonstrated both outstanding individual brilliance and team collaboration as they competed in the High School Team Maths event at Dulwich College Suzhou.
- Christine H. won in the Under-15 category.
- Daniel Y. topped the Under-17 age group.
- Our students also tied for first place in the team round Crypto, where problem-solving under pressure was key.
FOBISIA Secondary Mathematics Competition
In Malaysia, our students faced intense competition at the FOBISIA Secondary Mathematics Competition.
- One of our teams placed 9th out of 44 teams from across Asia — an impressive achievement in a field of top-tier international schools.
- 2 students ranked in the top 10 for the individual round out of 180 participants, highlighting their outstanding mathematical thinking and determination.
These competitions have several stated aims:
Academic - Students will be encouraged to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts and problem-solving techniques.
Inspirational - Students will show an enthusiasm for mathematics through engaging and challenging activities that highlight its beauty and relevance.
Collaboration - Students will be provided opportunities to work together, share ideas, and learn from one another in a supportive environment.
Global Citizens - Students will meet and interact with students from across the world to develop a greater sense of international mindedness.
