National Poetry Day: Celebrating our Poetry Anthology Launch

They say the four pillars of success are wisdom, well-being, wonder and giving. One could argue that poetry can provide an environment supportive of success; where we come together and reflect through rhyme, rhythm, free verse and metaphor.

Thursday, 6 October was National Poetry Day; a day where we enjoy the beauty, wisdom and wonder of poetry in its many forms. The theme for this years’ National Poetry Day was The Environment.

National Poetry Day

The English department celebrated this theme in their lessons across Year 7-10, with our Senior School developing their creative writing skills: focusing on the importance of environmental protection.

In the Senior School, we also focused on giving back; our students giving back their art for our teachers to hear. This was work based on the written poetry created by our students, and inspired by an EiM workshop delivered by writer, musician and poet, Mark Grist.

In March 2022, our Year 7 and 8 students took part in the poetry workshop hosted by Mark Grist. The work of several of these students was selected to feature in an anthology, featuring work from students across Dulwich College International and Education in Motion (EiM) family of schools. Student work is represented from Switzerland, China, Singapore, South Korea and beyond.

On National Poetry Day our students came together to present and perform their original poems for a lunchtime poetry viewing, with their teachers as audience members.

At the end of the performances, our students were celebrated in Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi’s very own anthology launch. Copies of the anthology, featuring the poems created by the selected students, were presented by Founding Head of College, David Ingram, as a congratulatory accolade for all of their wonderful contributions. Our students also received a personal congratulations from Mr Grist too - his gratitude and enjoyment of delivering the workshop to the Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi community was clear to see.

We look forward to the next poetry workshop with Mark Grist this year, and a big thank you to all of our students who contributed to this fantastic event.
