Romeo and Juliet: Senior School Production Breaks Hearts & Wows

Theatre has always been an integral part of Dulwich College's DNA and is a key aspect of the holistic education we provide. Our roots in the performing arts stem from a rich heritage, tracing back to the founding of Dulwich College in London in 1619 by Edward Alleyn, a renowned Shakespearean actor. Our Senior School continues to foster this heritage by providing a platform for students to showcase their talents and develop their creativity. Our annual Senior School production has once again lived up to this expectation, offering a unique interpretation of one of William Shakespeare's most famous plays. 'Romeo & Juliet' hit the stage on Wednesday evening, leaving the audience both emotionally stirred and immensely impressed. By blending classical drama with modern themes, the superb acting from our budding thespians left the audience in awe, and for much of the night, in tears.

“Romeo & Juliet, performed by the students of Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi Senior School, left the audience in tears this Wednesday evening. This sword-shattering, gut-wrenching, star-defying event shed a whole new light on the play, with the classic themes magnified by the contemporary lens of emo music and style from teenagers of the early 2000’s. Not only did our young actors show their prowess with moving moments of truthful raw emotion on stage, but also with their touching musical performances and hair-raising stage combat. Off stage, the backstage crew managed the performance, making sure all props and costume changes were handled seamlessly. We were also proud of our tech crew of Year 9 and Year 7 boys who designed and operated the lighting, sound, and many microphones throughout the entire live performance. We are so proud of all of our students who took part in this night that will go down in College history, for never was a story of more woe, than that of Juliet and her Romeo!”

The success of this year's Senior School production is a testament to the talent, hard work, and dedication of the students involved, both on and off the stage. Superior technical work behind the scenes ensured a theatrical spectacle that flowed seamlessly for the audience, allowing them to fully appreciate the heartfelt performances of the talented students on stage. We share the sentiments of Jess Ivey Sun, Drama Teacher and Director of the play, who wrote, "I am so proud of how the students have stepped up to this serious responsibility and have put safety, kindness, and hard work first in order to pull off this impressive production. I will treasure the memories of working with these amazing young people." Congratulations to the Senior School students and Ms. Ivey Sun!
