Support Biodiversity: Join The Great Backyard Bird Count with Us

As has been amply demonstrated with recent news of early round university offers, our Year 13 students are Graduating Worldwise. It is our hope that our students’ global outlook will be formed and developed through the experiences they gain from our purposeful, personalised curriculum; a curriculum that is underpinned by our College values;

As a community, we aim to Make a Difference Together. One of the most meaningful ways we make a difference is by supporting biodiversity.

 

Why do we need biodiversity?
————

Biodiversity is essential for the processes that support life on Earth, including humankind. Without a wide range of animals, plants and microorganisms, we cannot have the healthy ecosystems that we rely on to provide us with the air we breathe and the food we eat.

The Kingfisher can be seen perching by the canal running along the entrance to the Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi campus. 

How does our College promote biodiversity?
————

Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi supports biodiversity in lots of ways:

  • We care for the local environment through participating in activities such as beach clean-ups with Hands on Shanghai
  • We raise funds in support of reforestation in China through The Million Tree Project. This helps protect endangered animals like the Cao Vit Gibbon.
  • We are partnering with Elevated Honey, who protect wild Chinese bees that play a vital role in pollinating the Yunnan rainforest and its unique wildlife.
  • We promote awareness of the numerous species of birds that frequent our beautiful green campus with bespoke identification signs that help develop our students’ knowledge and understanding of nature.

The Daurian Redstart is regular visitor to our campus during the winter months. 

How can your family support biodiversity?
————

You and your children can support biodiversity by participating in The Great Backyard Bird Count running from 17 February to 20 February 2023, organised by the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society and Birds Canada.

All you need to do is spend 15 minutes or more observing birds in your community and then share your results. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Merlin Bird ID App can help you with the identification. I use it every day and it’s easy to use.

It is easy and fun to join, and you will be joining an international event of like-minded people who want to Make a Difference in the world. Together we will be making a difference by supporting important research into bird populations. It’s a great way your child to learn more about biodiversity and enjoy the awe and wonder of nature.
