The most important 10 minutes of your day?

By the age of 4, a child who is read to by an adult, one who openly talks and involves them in the pictures they see and the storylines they hear will have experienced approximately 1700 hours of story time. They will have heard roughly 33 million words, and will most likely be able to read by the time they start formal education at the age of 5.
The impact of this in the classroom is immense. By the age of 10, children who read regularly have encountered thousands of characters. They have been on endless adventures, and absorbed countless facts. So when they come to present their ideas in class, to write reports and stories for their homework…. they simply perform better – they have a treasure chest of language and ideas to borrow from.
The good news is, getting your child to love reading is simple, and it starts early. Resist the temptation to give your child an Ipad before bedtime and instead, pick up a book. Build a simple habit of 10 minutes reading time together into your child’s bedtime routine. Ask lots of questions, discuss great ideas, solve mysteries, or just laugh out loud. As a team of highly qualified teachers here at Dulwich Minhang, we can assure you, your child will reap the benefits and appreciate every second of your 10 minutes together.
