Why Does Leadership Matter? Celebrating Student Leadership

Otto T, Year 12 | Senior School Head Student
An investiture ceremony is about more than a badge. It is about accepting a promise - a promise to serve this incredible community, to listen to your voices, and to lead with humility and passion.
At Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi, we believe every student has the capacity to lead, whether by inspiring their peers, standing up for what is right, or making a difference in their community.
This week, our community gathered for the Student Leadership Investiture Ceremony, officially entrusting our newly elected leaders with their roles. From Head Students to House Captains and Student Council representatives, this diverse group now carries the voice and spirit of their peers.

Courage to Step Forward
To step forward as a leader takes courage. As Senior School Head Student Otto T (Year 12) reminded us: leadership is not about titles or badges, it is about a journey of growth, service, and responsibility. It is about action to creat positive impact in classrooms, Houses, events, and the wider school community. With the support of their teachers and mentors, our student leaders are ready to face challenges with empathy, resilience, and vision.

Leadership with Purpose
Leadership at Dulwich Puxi is lived out in everyday actions. Primary School Head Student Peter D (Year 6) expressed his commitment to listening and supporting his peers:
"I will make sure every voice is heard, no matter who you are or which class you are in. I will listen, support, and turn ideas into action."

His fellow Head Student Eddy W (Year 6) reminded us that leadership also lies in small gestures:
"By inviting someone into a game, saying kind words, or showing good manners, we can make our community stronger."

Resilience And Change
Otto also highlighted resilience as a defining quality of our school:
"From the sports field to the academic arena, we proved that we are a community of all-round excellence. These achievements are more than medals or certificates. They are proof that when we support one another and work toward a common goal, there is nothing we cannot accomplish."
Looking to the year ahead, he called on his peers to embrace change as an opportunity:
"Change is not something to be feared; it is the engine of growth. Let’s adapt, achieve, and advance, together."

Beyond School: Leadership for Life
The lessons of leadership at Dulwich Puxi extend far beyond the classroom. Collaboration, problem-solving, initiative, and resilience are qualities valued by universities and employers worldwide. More importantly, they shape character, preparing our students to lead with empathy and responsibility in an ever-changing world.
As an international school, we provide our students with a wide range of global opportunities to develop their leadership skills through international events such as the Student Leadership Conference, which will take place in January 2026. We look forward to seeing how they rise to the occasion and showcase their talents.
