Inquiry-Based Learning is Alive at Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi

At Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi we are blessed to have a green campus filled with nature that sparks interest and provides incredible opportunities for self-guided learning, the key to inquiry-based education. This week we had one such very special moment, as Ms. Higgins explains;

Some Reception children found a very big caterpillar in our garden and we put it in a special box with leaves and the next day it had made a cocoon. The children were so entranced by this that one of the students told her mum all about it and then she brought a chrysalis of a butterfly into school from home.

The children were amazed to arrive in school on Thursday to find that the chrysalis had opened and there was now a beautiful big butterfly. We very carefully took it out to the garden and it flapped it’s wings and flew onto Sicily. She laughed so much. Then the butterfly flew high into the trees.

We are still waiting for the cocoon to open. I wonder what will come out?

The awe and wonder of nature has opened up an amazing learning opportunity for our Reception children.
