Maintaining Chinese as a Native Language in International Schools
Date: | Wednesday, 28 June 2023 |
Time: | 12:30pm to 1:15pm |
Age-Range: | 2 to 18 years old |
Presenters: | Amber Zhou, Head of Mandarin Rebecca Zhao, Head of Primary Mandarin |
In this Parents as Partners session, our Mandarin department will share key insights into how students can develop and maintain Chinese at a native language level during their time at an international school where English is the language both of instruction and social settings. As the landscape of IGCSE and IB course requirements evolve, it can be challenging for students in an English-speaking environment to meet the ever-demanding benchmarks of these assessments.
Ms. Zhou, Head of Mandarin, and Ms. Zhao, Head of Primary Mandarin, are here to guide parents. They will shed light on the structure and expectations of the IBDP ‘Chinese A: Language and Literature’ and the IGCSE Chinese First Language (0509) courses, and how parents can ensure their children are on track for success in these challenging subjects. They will address questions such as, “How can we utilise the resources available in school during lessons and activities, especially for Junior School students?”, “What is the ideal language pathway for students transitioning to Y9 next year?”. Their workshop will answer these questions and more, providing a comprehensive overview and practical strategies.
Promising to be both interactive and insightful, their workshop aims to share professional experiences and concrete methodologies to aid parents in supporting their children. We will explore how to sustain Chinese as a Native Language at home and in the wider community, ultimately setting your child up for success in a global, multilingual world.
