Celebrating Holistic Growth and Wellbeing through Sports Days

At Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi, we recognise the value of a balanced education that goes beyond academic excellence to nurture the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of our students. One way we achieve this is through our annual Sports Days, which foster a sense of camaraderie, healthy competition, and teamwork in our students. By offering a wide range of athletic activities, we empower students to discover their passions and become confident, collaborative, healthy young people.

Last week saw an epic battle of the Houses as our students from Year 3 to Year 10 took to the track and field to compete in our Junior and Senior Sports Days. Over the course of the week, students competed to earn points for their House, taking them one step closer to becoming the overall House Cup Champions.

DCSPX Sports Days

Field events consisted of high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot putt, and javelin. On the track we saw middle distance races and sprints, with the addition of 4x100m relay races for the Senior School. Through all of these events, our students were Aiming High Together, reflected in the 20+ records broken by Senior School students. Whilst seniors were breaking records, the Junior School were creating them! The Junior School Sports Day record book was officially created for Sports Day 2023 with 16 records being made from students in Years 3 to 6!

We enjoyed an exciting week of sports. Thank you to all the parents who joined us to cheer on our student athletes. There have been many highlights, as reflected in the lovely pictures captured throughout the week. Sports Days are a lot of fun, and bring three significant benefits to our students;

“Friendship first, competition second” – Yao Ming

Being part of a team

It would be difficult to find a more competitive athlete than Yao Ming but I am not surprised by his quote. Sports Day is a social event and provides students with an opportunity to be part of something bigger. There is value in competing, but one of the most underrated elements of sport is teamwork, camaraderie and spirit. These are qualities that last a lifetime.

Competition

Our students will face competition throughout their lives so it is important that they experience the challenges of winning and losing in school. Competing effectively involves practice and preparation and resilience and resolve. It is always nice to win a medal but what we really want for our students to takeaway from their experiences is the determination to do their best and keep trying.

Wellbeing

Active bodies are healthy bodies. Participation in sports contributes to a healthy lifestyle. It was great to see our students being active together - running,  jumping and throwing. We want this to become a regular habit for all members of our College community.

DCSPX Sports Days

Sports Days are more than just a day of friendly rivalry between Houses. They showcase the importance of sportsmanship, community, and holistic development. We congratulate all students who participated and demonstrated our College values of Aiming High Together, Working Hard Together, Being Kind and Respectful Together and Making a Difference Together. It was great to see our young Mustangs embodying our Mustang Spirit: Pride, Passion, Resilience and Respect.
