Digital Citizenship: March Media Mentor Month

The world is rapidly changing. Digital citizenship is a critical element of 21st century life and our students need all the help they can get. To support our parents in becoming digital mentors, Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi are taking part in March Media Mentor Month, along with the rest of the EiM family of schools.

What type of digital parent are you? Speaker and author Alexandra Samuel categorises today’s parents into three groups according to how they support their child’s online life:

  1. The limiter, who keeps their child offline as much as possible and often strictly limits screen time.
  2. The enabler, who lets their child make their own choices online and explore by themselves.
  3. The mentor, who guides their child online, cultivates their child’s digital skills, and engages with their child’s online world.

Whilst it is likely that you will fit into each category at least once in your child’s life, studies have shown that the children of mentor parents often fare much better online than those whose parents are primarily limiters or enablers. Children of mentor parents inherit safe and conscientious online behaviours, and are often less exposed to risky or dangerous websites.

Join us for March Media Mentor Month. Follow along with our calendar of activities and support your child to become a safe digital citizen.
