Senior School Challenge Week: A Week Without Walls
At Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi, we believe that learning goes far beyond the classroom. As an international school, we recognise the importance of outdoor education in fostering global perspectives and personal growth, and Challenge Week showed us the value of these experiences.
Our Senior School students set off on an amazing adventure for Challenge Week, exploring the beautiful mountains and valleys of Yunnan and Guizhou, as well as the iconic Great Wall in Beijing. They faced physical and mental challenges, hiking through tough terrain and adapting to new environments. These experiences pushed them out of their comfort zones, helping them develop resourcefulness and resilience — key qualities for personal growth.
One, Personal Relationships That Enable Personal Pathways
One of the most rewarding aspects of these trips has been witnessing the bonds formed between students and staff. These shared experiences cement the relationships that are crucial in supporting our personal pathways approach. At Dulwich Puxi, we pride ourselves on knowing our students as individuals, with names, not numbers. This personal touch makes the value of outdoor learning all the more powerful. For example, our Year 8 and 9 students started their journey in Beijing with a camping experience under the stars, where they learned archery and took part in team-building activities that strengthened their friendships.
Two, Part of Something Bigger
Our students have also had the unique opportunity to connect with nature and rural communities. In Yunnan, our Year 7 students spent time with villagers, gaining insight into lives that follow the cycle of the seasons. This experience reinforced our learning about the environment and sustainability, while also demonstrating the importance of community support - a value we hold dear at our college.
Three,Using Privilege for Good
Service is another cornerstone of our Dulwich education. Our students have embraced this. Year 10 and 12 students showcased initiative and leadership in fundraising for local community and teaching kindergarten children in Guizhou, developing skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. Year 7 students supported beehive projects in Yunnan.

Four,Cultural Insights for Global Citizens
During their travels, our students learned about China’s rich history and heritage — an essential part of becoming global citizens. In Beijing, they explored cultural landmarks like the Great Wall and the Summer Palace, tried their hand at traditional crafts, and enjoyed the results of their efforts. In Yunnan, they immersed themselves in Tibetan culture, while in Guizhou, they got involved in service work within the vibrant Dong community.
Learning for Life
These outdoor learning experiences are integral to our mission of empowering students to make a positive difference in the world. The confidence, resilience, and sense of community fostered during these trips contribute to why our graduates are so well-prepared for university life. They leave us proud of who they are, equipped to engage with peers while maintaining their unique identities!
