Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi STEAM Week was a huge success! Students across both Primary and Senior Schools took part in workshops and challenges aimed at raising awareness of STEAM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics - and getting them excited for how STEAM can change the world.
On Monday, students took part in workshops themed around our College values: Aim High Together, Work Hard Together, Be Kind & Respectful Together, and Make a Difference Together.
For many students this may have been their first experience with specific technologies, such as the Unity engine in the Ubisoft workshop, AI art generators, or 3D modelling on TinkerCad.
For others, fun was had when taking apart and rebuilding old technology, eating treats while learning about the Science of Cooking, or working on teamwork in gaming challenges.
Those who took part in the robotics workshop were able to pass their skills forward to Year 4 as they taught younger students how to use Dash and Dot robots, and the library will soon be home to completed works of art made during the Book Folding session.
During Tuesday and Wednesday’s sessions, students once again took part in activities but this time working in their mentor groups to complete challenges set by EiM. Each year group was given a scenario linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with students using a variety of resources to create prototypes that could solve global issues.
Year 7 used recycled food containers and plastic bottles to design a system to move tomatoes down a mountainside in Nepal to support women selling crops at their local market.
The design process was a bit closer to home for Year 8, who used a mixture of LEGO blocks and modelling clay to design portable wheelchair ramps for the College.
Making systems to make clean water using old tights, gravel, sand, and other materials was the challenge of the day for Year 9, whilst the mission for Year 10 was based around NASA’s challenge to design and test gliders to provide the longest flight.
At the end of Wednesday, Primary school students were invited to see what had been completed in the Senior school and to share their own stories of STEAM Week in Primary.
It was great to watch STEAM education having such an impact around College last week, and I am extremely excited for our upcoming announcement about a new partnership that will take our STEAM curriculum to the next level. Stay tuned!
