January 2019: Dulwich College Puxi To Open 3rd Toddler Class

“A Dulwich education aims to ensure that young people become successful learners, confident individuals, and responsible citizens. There is a strong emphasis on children’s personal development, including the development of learning and thinking skills and personal, social and emotional skills. The structure of the curriculum has been designed to provide breadth and balance whilst focusing on English, Chinese and Maths development.”

- Christine Haslett, Head of Primary and Deputy Head of College

Dulwich College Puxi is delighted to announce the appointment of British teacher, Ms Eva Park, an experienced Early Years educator who will be working with our Toddler team in January as we expand to open our 3rd Toddler class. We are now accepting applications for 2-3 year old Toddlers in full and half day students and welcome applications before 1 December.

LEARNING IN TODDLERS AT DUCKS PUXI

The Toddler class at Dulwich is considered the foundational start to an academic journey. It is a year of discovery, learning and development. And we have a lot of fun learning together!
Our educational goal for children in Toddlers is that each child can meet the required emotional and social expectations, and are fully capable to transition into our more formal learning environment presented in the Dulwich Nursery.

Throughout the Toddler year, we prepare each child:

1. COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT

We give Toddlers opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

2. PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

We give Toddlers opportunities to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

3. PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

We give Toddlers opportunities to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.

4. LITERACY DEVELOPMENT

We give Toddlers opportunities to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Todders are given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest.

5. MATHEMATICS

We give Toddlers opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measure.

6. UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD

We give Toddlers opportunities to make sense of their physical world. We explore all areas of the campus, observing and finding out about people, places, technology and the environment around us.

7. EXPRESSIVE ARTS AND DESIGN

We give Toddlers opportunities to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, art and design.

THE DULWICH DUAL LANGUAGE APPROACH

The DUCKS (Dulwich Kindergarten) language development approach values both English and Mandarin equally. We want children to acquire both languages concurrently. We therefore use a dual language approach in our classrooms. Our highly experienced English teachers will lead the curriculum using spoken English. The children’s learning will be supported by an Assistant Teacher who speaks Mandarin as a first language, but who speaks fluent English as well. The physical learning environment, including print, will be in both English and Mandarin. The aim of the Dual Language approach in DUCKS is to develop fluent speakers in English and Mandarin who can comfortably switch from one language to another, while always remaining secure in their first language. We therefore do not restrict spoken Chinese language around the campus.
